Job Description

As a Principal Data Engineer, you will analyze, plan, develop, test and deploy enterprise-scale Microsoft Azure cloud data warehouse and business intelligence solutions. You will be responsible for the ingestion and transformation components of the data platform and will apply your technical expertise to promote innovative solutions. You will develop relationships with internal and external customer stakeholders and play a key role in delivering the go-forward enterprise data strategy.


Role & Responsibilities:

Data Strategy & Architecture:

  • Architect, design and deploy enterprise-scale BI solutions on Azure to support:
    • Enterprise KPI’s & analytics
    • Data Science
    • Data Visualization & Reporting (via Power BI) for internal and external audiences
  • Architect, design and Implement OLAP data transformation patterns using PaaS offerings (Data Factory, Logic Apps, Functions, Event Hubs, Databricks, and various storage offerings)
  • Lead technical discussions that drive decisions and implementation approaches
  • Partner with Agile scum master(s) to break down development and implementation features, stories, and tasks
  • Review and manage technical requirements and business functional requirements that drive data transformation processes
  • Provide oversight and apply best practices to full stack source code control and deployments across multiple environments, using Azure DevOps
  • Execute on implementation plans to deploy Azure infrastructure and move workloads off of legacy systems
  • Play a key role in digital transformation and have a voice with Sr. IT leadership as well as Sr. business stakeholders

Engineering Oversight:

  • Detailed knowledge of
    • ETL/ELT data transformation patterns
    • Enterprise data warehouse and/or data mart design
    • Change Data Capture
  • Detailed knowledge of cloud data storage technologies (e.g., T-SQL, NoSQL, Spark SQL, etc.)
  • Experienced with SQL and NoSQL data technologies
  • Practical knowledge of common CI/CD technologies
  • Practical knowledge and hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure PaaS offerings
  • Working knowledge or Power BI or similar data visualization tools
  • Working knowledge or analytic tools and best practices

Communication & problem solving and leadership skills Including:

  • Facilitates conversations with team members and principal engineers
  • Able to generate enthusiasm and buy in for new idea’s
  • Familiar with modern data architectures and able to communicate the pros and cons to the business

REQUIRED Skills & Experience:

  • 7+ years of IT/data management experience
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on data management (OLAP and OLTP solutions)
  • Experience with data modeling and various optimization techniques for performant reports and dashboards
  • Experience with creating data visualizations with Power BI
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline; MS or MBA preferred
  • Experience with multiple data storage technologies (e.g., T-SQL, NoSQL, Hadoop, Kafka, etc.)
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, TFS, GitHub or other modern Source Code Management Tools
  • Experience with CI/CD tools
  • Experience with statistical programming languages (e.g., R, Python, SAS, etc.…) - Preferred
  • Experience optimizing and tuning databases and related objects
  • Experience implementing and supporting database solutions on Microsoft Azure
  • Experience with data warehousing best practices
  • Experience ingesting, processing & storing and analyzing data with Azure and other visualization tools
  • Experience with ETL/ELT patterns
  • Experience with data modeling best practices and tools
  • IT healthcare experience - Preferred
  • IoT experience – Preferred
  • Deep understanding of data structures (structured and semi-structured data)
  • Practical understanding of database improvement techniques
  • Be a change agent
  • Ability to diagnose and prioritize organizational needs, as well as successfully execute most effective course of action
  • Knowledgeable of data regulations and policies (e.g. ISO13485)
  • Generate enthusiasm and evangelize your ideas, new features, and improvements
  • Ability to tell a story with data
  • Data Visualization experience, or strong affinity for leveraging data to help transform business functions
  • Medical device industry experience
  • Big Data experience
  • NoSQL experience
