One thing I’ve seen consistently in my work with clients is how often organizations don’t realize the flexible HR support options available to them. When an unexpected departure happens, or a smaller company needs HR help but doesn’t have the workload to justify a full-time hire, leaders often assume they have two choices: hire fast, or go without.
There’s a whole range of options in between, and for many businesses, that middle ground is exactly what they need.
What’s the Difference in Flexible HR Options
These three engagement types get used interchangeably, but they solve different problems:
- Fractional HR support is a part-time, embedded resource who owns a function or outcome on an ongoing basis, typically 10 to 30 hours a week, often with real decision-making authority. It’s the right fit when a company needs real HR expertise and leadership but can’t yet justify a full-time role.
- Interim HR support is a full-time (40+ hours a week) temporary replacement who fully owns a critical role during a transition, typically for three to nine months. The focus is stability and continuity while the organization decides on its long-term path.
- Project HR support brings in an external expert to advise, assess, or deliver on a specific initiative, such as a handbook overhaul or a compensation study. It’s not embedded in day-to-day operations and carries no direct authority over employees, the focus is the deliverable, not the role.
Getting this match right matters: a company that brings in project-based support when it actually needs an embedded fractional leader often ends up with plenty of recommendations and nothing implemented. One that brings in interim help when it really needs long-term transformation just maintains the status quo. And a company that hires fractional support when it really needs full-time execution ends up underpowered for what it’s facing.
Finding the Right Fit
We help clients assess their workload, projects, and gaps, then match them with a consultant suited to what the business actually requires: an experienced HR professional covering essential functions without the cost or commitment of a full-time role that may not fit their size or budget.
The most rewarding part is watching leaders realize they have options they didn’t know existed. Many don’t even know these solutions exist until we walk through them together, and seeing that clarity click into place is one of my favorite parts of the work.
