The Future of HR: In-Demand Work Skills of 2020

As Baby Boomers retire and Generation Z enters the workforce, it’s clear things are changing. Our technology is evolving and advancing at an impressive rate. In 1996, the ASCI Red Super Computer, which was the size of two tennis courts, had a processing power of about 1.3 Teraflops. Only 18 years later, the PlayStation 4 game console bested that mark with 1.95 teraflops of processing power.

As technology evolves, so do the desired work competencies. According to a January 2016 article by the Work Economic Forum (WEF), the fourth industrial revolution is upon us, and the skill set needs are shifting. The workplace skills that are valued more (or valued less) in 2020 may surprise you.

In the future, leaders will look for employees with the ability to be creative, formulate solutions around complex problems, and stand by their decisions. While “Complex Problem Solving” is still the most sought after skillset, the ability to make decisions on independently is becoming a more desired skill. It might surprise you that the ability to work in groups, negotiate, and come to a compromise is not as valued by hiring leaders of 2020.
