Insurance Accounting Lead
The Enterprise Accounting & Payable Services Lead serves as the technical and operational leader for accounting and accounts payable functions, providing expertise, training, and guidance across the team. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely accounting operations, maintaining strong internal controls, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and leading cross-functional projects and system enhancements. The ideal candidate brings deep accounting operations experience, strong project leadership skills, and the ability to drive results in a dynamic, high-volume environment without direct people management responsibilities.
Worksite Location: Hybrid opportunity based in Minneapolis, MN or Appleton, WI. In-office presence 2-3 days per week is preferred, with additional onsite collaboration required during major system implementations or process changes.
Salary: $90,000 - $120,000 | Competitive compensation package commensurate with experience.

Required Skills & Experience:

Lead period-end close activities, general ledger accounting, accounts payable operations, and account reconciliations to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.

Establish and maintain standards for accounting processes, controls, system integrations, and service delivery expectations.

Oversee accounting projects, system implementations, integrations, audit remediation efforts, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Develop, standardize, and maintain process documentation, control narratives, and business continuity plans.

Monitor workloads, transaction volumes, deadlines, and operational risks while reallocating resources to address changing business demands.

Identify process bottlenecks and operational risks, communicating recommendations and solutions to leadership.

Resolve complex accounting, transactional, and control-related issues while ensuring compliance with accounting policies and regulatory requirements.

Coordinate system upgrades, enhancements, testing activities, and maintenance initiatives with IT and business stakeholders.

Review system and process outcomes to ensure data integrity, reporting accuracy, and alignment with business needs.

Manage shared inbox workflows and communication practices to support service-level expectations and stakeholder satisfaction.

Analyze trends and operational data to identify opportunities for process enhancements and increased efficiency.

Facilitate cross-training initiatives and rotational assignments to ensure adequate team coverage and operational continuity.

Drive workflow optimization, automation efforts, and technology-enabled process improvements to increase scalability and reduce operational risk.

Oversee monthly KPI reporting and risk indicator monitoring, ensuring accuracy, supporting documentation, and remediation activities are completed.

Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, collaboration, and exceptional client service.
Required Skills & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Mathematics, or related field; equivalent experience considered.

7+ years of accounting, finance, or operations experience.

Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, accounts payable operations, transaction processing, and internal controls.

Experience working with auditors and regulatory requirements.

Proven success leading cross-functional projects and operational initiatives.

Experience working within ERP and accounting systems, including platforms such as PeopleSoft, Concur, or similar solutions.

Demonstrated ability to manage complex processes independently and drive outcomes with minimal supervision.

Experience working within shared services or high-volume transaction environments.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders across multiple functions.

Proven ability to coordinate workflows and lead through influence rather than direct authority.

Strong operational judgment, attention to detail, and execution discipline.
Preferred Skills & Experience:

Experience within financial services or a large corporate accounting environment.

Demonstrated success leading operational transformation, stabilization, or continuous improvement initiatives.

CPA, CMA, MBA, or progress toward professional certification.

Experience utilizing Power BI, Power Query, or other reporting and business intelligence tools.

Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
