AI Software Engineer

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help redefine how software gets built. In this AI-native environment, autonomous agents handle much of the implementation while you direct execution, review at scale, establish quality standards, and make the critical decisions that turn generated code into production-ready systems. If you're the engineer who spots what others miss, thrives on technical ownership, and believes great engineering is measured by outcomes, not lines of code, this is your chance to shape the future of software development.

Job Summary

A leading technology organization serving thousands of public sector and regulated industry customers operates an AI-native software development lifecycle, where autonomous agents perform high-confidence implementation work and senior engineers direct, review, and own delivery outcomes. This engineering model is established and expanding across additional product teams.

The organization follows modern AI engineering practices including generator-verifier architectures, evaluation-driven development, staged deployments, and high-volume autonomous pull request workflows within highly regulated and security-sensitive environments. The focus is on engineers who can define and uphold these standards, not simply leverage AI-assisted coding tools.
Location : Remote
Salary: $150K-$180K
Benefits information: Competitive benefits package

Key Operating Principles

  • Autonomous agents execute within controlled development environments and branches.
  • All AI-generated code is reviewed and approved by senior engineers before production deployment.
  • Accountability remains with the responsible engineer regardless of how code is generated.
  • Security, compliance, accessibility, and quality requirements are treated as core engineering responsibilities.
  • Development practices align with rigorous regulatory and governance frameworks.

Why This Role Exists

As AI systems generate an increasing percentage of initial implementation work, engineering value shifts toward orchestration, evaluation, review, and quality ownership. This role is designed for an experienced engineer who excels at directing AI-enabled delivery workflows, establishing measurable quality standards, reviewing generated code at scale, and delivering reliable production software in a regulated environment.

The successful candidate will help shape the future of AI-native software engineering practices while maintaining a high standard of technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Lead AI-Directed Development

  • Break down complex initiatives into work suitable for autonomous agent execution.
  • Coordinate, review, and integrate AI-generated output into production systems.
  • Guide delivery workflows across multiple concurrent workstreams.

Drive Quality Through Review

  • Review large volumes of AI-generated pull requests with a focus on:
    • Correctness
    • Security
    • Performance
    • Accessibility
    • Maintainability
  • Identify defects not captured through automated testing.

Build Evaluation Frameworks

  • Create and maintain evaluation suites that objectively measure software quality.
  • Establish testing and validation criteria that ensure reliable outcomes.
  • Promote evaluation-driven development practices.

Own End-to-End Delivery

  • Maintain accountability for software quality regardless of implementation source.
  • Ensure solutions meet performance, security, accessibility, and compliance requirements.
  • Support production stability through proactive monitoring and remediation.

Improve Engineering Systems

  • Identify opportunities to improve AI-assisted development processes, workflows, prompts, and evaluation mechanisms.
  • Contribute to evolving engineering standards and best practices.
  • Help scale successful patterns across teams.

Maintain Secure Operations

  • Operate within established security boundaries and governance requirements.
  • Support secure execution environments, credential management, and controlled deployment practices.

Qualifications

Required

  • Strong foundation in software engineering, including systems design, testing, and architecture.
  • Proven track record delivering and supporting production software.
  • Experience utilizing AI-assisted or autonomous development tools in real-world software projects.
  • Strong code-review skills with the ability to identify issues beyond automated testing results.
  • Ability to work independently and drive initiatives forward with minimal oversight.
  • Demonstrated ownership mindset and commitment to engineering excellence.

Preferred

  • Experience working in highly regulated, security-focused, or compliance-driven environments.
  • Expertise in test-first, evaluation-driven, or quality-focused development methodologies.
  • Full-stack engineering experience with the ability to assess both front-end and back-end implementations.
  • Experience serving government, public-sector, healthcare, financial services, or similarly regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with modern AI engineering workflows and autonomous development practices.

Ideal Candidate Profile

You may be a strong fit if you:

  • Effectively leverage AI systems to accelerate software delivery while maintaining deep technical oversight.
  • View rigorous code review as a critical engineering discipline.
  • Prefer measurable quality standards over subjective validation.
  • Can identify and address shortcomings in AI-generated solutions.
  • Enjoy influencing engineering practices, workflows, and technical standards.

This role offers the opportunity to help define the future of AI-enabled software engineering while maintaining ownership of quality, security, and delivery outcomes.
